These birds are spending their winter in Florida. They come to escape the cold weather to the north and raise their babies. I made their portraits on the east coast around Merritt Island and Cape Canaveral. They are just beautiful, and I hope you enjoy seeing them as much as I do.
Some birds like these Great Blue Heron choose to stay north during the winter and brave the cold. I photographed them and their frozen home in eastern Maryland. The weather that year was colder than usual, and all of the fishing spots were frozen. I empathized with their struggle and respected their tenacity when I saw them. I hope these photographs give you that same feeling.
